Vanney (Rights) to LA for Quavas Kirk (Person)

By: jon | February 15th, 2008

Goff is reporting that LA has traded Quavas Kirk to DCU for the rights of again defender Greg Vanny.

SO….lemme get this right. You trade a cheap Generation Adidas player, who is a tiny hit on the salary cap, for an old, slowish defender who will cost much more.

Alexi, wtf are you doing?

DCU front office? You guys are brilliant.

What are your thoughts?

I could be waaay off-base but its like the Xavier signing. He was great at first and then kind-of pooped out. Seems Kirk is healthy again so DCU may make out pretty well here (once more).

If the western conference knew what was good for them they would just stop making trades with Dave Kaspar/Kevin Payne.

Very good considering Olsen’s recovery from his surgery is not going fast making Mediate the only right mid-fielder we have signed & healthy (unless you count McTavish as the teams current swiss-army knife- he did play wing 2006 before his knee injury). Might spell then end of Moose’s chances of getting back on the team, or we might have them both if we are really worried about Benny.

For as much as they’ve been playing Moose in the scrims, I think we’re keeping both, and Olsen will be out for a while. Is there a roster size limit in MLS? I should know, but I don’t.

I’m personally offended at DC United’s persistent ability to make everyone else look friggin’ stupid.

18 senior roster players; 10 developmental players. Senior roster count toward the cap and have a minimum salary of 30kish. Dev roster players don’t count towards the cap and make either a Gen Ad salary or the 12k or 17k salaries that bug your eyes out in the annual salary list. You also cannot have a player over 25 on the dev list. United has, I believe, on the roster:

    Senior
    1. Zach Wells
    2. Jose Carvallo
    3. Bryan Namoff
    4. Devon McTavish
    5. Gonzalo Peralta
    6. Gonzalo Martinez
    7. Marc Burch
    8. Clyde Simms
    9. Ben Olsen
    10. Dominic Mediate
    11. Fred
    12. Marcelo Gallardo
    13. Jaime Moreno
    14. Luciano Emillio
    15. Guy Roland Kpene
    16. Lucas Niell
    17. **Open Spot**
    18. **Open Spot**

    Developmental
    1. Quavas Kirk (Gen A)
    2. Rod Dyachenko(until told otherwhise I will not upgrade Rod)
    3. John Carroll
    4. Ryan Cordeiro (the draft pick we’ve already signed- I don’t think to a senior spot.
    5-10. **Open Spots**

I think Moose is either too old to sign a dev contract or at a point where he can’t afford to wait on a dev contract anymore so he needs to claim one of the two available senior spots. I’m also looking at Rod to upgrade at some point this season or be out at the end of the year. Spots 5-10 will be draft picks/random aspirants on the dev roster

    We know we’re brilliant.

By the way, I don’t think that Alexi Lalas is even a fan of the Galaxy.

Add Dan Stratford in dev spot 5.

Also there are rumors Kpene might be asked to drop to a dev contract. Not sure how true that is.
