The Bell Tolls for Erpen

By: Max J. | June 29th, 2007

Yeah, look, I’m not going to pretend to shed too many tears for Facundo Erpen, most of which I think are based on optimistic attachment rather than any real impressiveness. I think we all liked him, in varying degrees, and he made all of us nervous, in varying degrees. After last night’s defensive performance, less nervousness is really the more important thing right now. So on the whole, I agree with the theory of the move. More consistency is needed and the team is attempting to find solutions. Good.

That having been said, Vanney is the replacement? Really? Was Vanney even the best option from Colorado’s back line, let alone the rest of the league? The fact that we will continue to pay Erpen’s $115K salary instead of Vanney’s definitely lessens the impact, but the age drop is huge. Which leads me to point number three…

Kevin Payne is not that stupid. Kevin Payne is not Billy King. He knows how to count from 24 to 34. Poplar Point Perspective is right: if there isn’t further action as a result of this trade, it’s a bad move. But I really think this trade signals a bigger defensive move on United’s part, rather than a panic trade for some defensive experience. Were that the case, Facu would have been gone after week three or four. I’m completely uninformed, but my gut is that some shadowy things are lining up for United and that we’ll have big news in the coming weeks.
