An Idle Thought About Josh Gros
By: Max J. | June 14th, 2007Goff has an update on DC’s new trialists:
Defender Kim Jaggy and forward Mira Mupier began their trials today and will be in camp for as long as necessary for the club to evaluate them. “We’re always looking for options to make our team better,” Soehn said. “As we continue to go through games and figure out what our needs are, we’ll continue to bring guys in and fill holes and needs.”
As a left back of apparently semi-decent pedigree, it’s no secret what Jaggy’s here for. So if his trial goes well and he becomes the new top choice on the left of the defense, where exactly does that leave Josh Gros?
Follow the highly contingent hypothetical situation with me for a minute: Jaggy is installed at left back; wing play in the current line-up continues to develop as we saw on Sunday; young players like Burch and Casal become solid first-team options. In all of this, Gros is out of a natural roster spot. It’s true that he adds good depth and range, but he does as a physical, effort-type player on a team that seems (to me, anyway) to at least be attempting to move towards a more technical game. And yet MLS typically likes that kind of gritty and athletic kind of player, and Gros is a known quantity in the league. So the thought begins to form in my head:
“Josh Gros could be great trade bait.”
Where exactly he would go, I have no idea. Like I said, it’s an idle thought that’s been brewing. But if he does indeed find himself trapped behind Casal/Benny and Jaggy on the left, is he a much better option off the bench than DeRoux or Moose or Simms? It’s at least a toss-up. In that case, I think he may get caught in between having too little value to the roster but too much just to let go. There are a lot of if’s here, but Gros’ future utility is definitely something worth pondering.

An intriguing thought, but Josh Gros defends well for a winger, and putting him against a Terry Cooke or Mullan is an attractive tactical option for any given game. Given our depth at CDM, I would think Simms or the Carroll brothers might be ahead on the list for trade bait, but it’s an intriguing idea. That is, of course, if any trialist gets signed.
