The Reaction: 8/15 @ LA Galaxy (SuperLiga)

By: Max J. | August 15th, 2007

I found my little Mexican place, but didn’t stay until the end. Didn’t have to, really. As soon as Beckham’s first free kick was spotted, you could tell which way this game was going to end.

This was almost a mirror image of last week. For the first twenty minutes, United looked pretty solid, without major problems on defense and pressuring nicely. Then somewhere before Beckham’s goal things started to break down on both ends and the free kick simply sealed the deal. Please note that Beckham’s night chiefly consisted of a goal, a nice set up for a goal, an almost identical setup for a very threatening run, and then a free kick that probably should have been a goal if not for Troy’s effort. Like I said, LA is figuring this whole situation out, and quickly. They were never abjectly, Salt Lake-style awful, just lacking in leadership and organization, Landycakes having command presence on par with a corner flag.

Of course, they were helped by a miserable performance and Tommy’s, um, interesting lineup decisions. The way you know Vanney in the midfield was a failure is that Vanney didn’t play in the midfield. Look at the tape and you’ll see him tracking back unconsciously to defend while Gros and his magical cast practically play third forward. But problems abound tonight. The defense basically withered away, Troy didn’t look particularly good, Fred continued his summer sabbatical, and the Arsenal Lite syndrome up top got its usual result. The only good things I can take away from this game were the feel-good fouls on Martino. Though, honestly, given the score and the meaningless red card implications, I’d have rather seen his ankle broken.

You know, it’s not that we didn’t get what we deserved. We got exactly that. It’s just that I’m so sick of deserving this result week after completely unsatisfying week. I’m really wondering if the team feels the same way.

EDIT: My bad on Vanney. I swear TeleFutura had him listed as a midfielder, honest (by the way, just for a second, how freaking awful was the TeleFutura broadcast? I was really shocked. HottieCam beats Beckham Cam, but still…ay Dios mio, guys.) Nevertheless, Vanney sucked a great sucking and that much is not debatable.
