Zzzzzzzz
By: Max J. | July 24th, 2007Nope, we’re not using Goff’s line to talk about the stadium (though, really, don’t you suddenly wish for the days when it was “Zzzzzzzzz” for the stadium instead of that noise that oddly resembles a plane careening into a mountain?). Today we’re using the 26th letter of the alphabet in honor of the noise greeting the much-hyped start of the SuperLiga. You’re forgiven for noticing it also sounds a lot like the official US Open Cup noise.
Ironic that there was so much commentary about MLS teams tanking the Open Cup to get to SuperLiga, since the moneybags tournament is now going to get the same excuses. LA, which at this writing is actually managing a scoreless draw, has sent a pretty clear signal with Beck’s absence that SuperLiga is a distinct second priority to the league. And you can bet (or at least I will) that Tommy is going to look at his depleted options tomorrow, take a glance at the MLS standings, and somehow decide that tomorrow’s game against Morelia is a decent time to start guys like deRoux and Jeff Carroll. Thus, we have two half-hearted MLS teams, two possibly up-for-it MLS teams, and four Mexican clubs in preseason form. Again, you’re forgiven for wondering why exactly we’re doing this tournament in the first place.
An American’s View has a more optimistic look on this (at least in terms of future growth), but aside from the $1 million bucks waiting for the winner, what exactly is so great about SuperLiga? For international competition, go for CONCACAF Champions Cup or Copa Sudamericana; at least if you’re going to pack your home stadium with hostile fans (sponsor’s note: offer void at Galaxy games) for a game you’re more likely that not to lose, you may as well do it for a trophy that’s semi-acknowledged. And if you want to hate on Mexico, go to a National Team game or volunteer for Tom Tancredo’s campaign staff, both are more fun. As it stands, SuperLiga is a gratuitious schedule clogger that’s already being dumped on in its opening year. If it folds, it’ll be hard to miss it very much.

A little harsh on the superliga, but you’re right on the overlap between it and the CONCACAF champions cup, it would seem we only need one or the other to have a ‘Champions league’ of our own in North America.
The MLS teams are doing alright in the Superliga so far. I think the Galaxy not playing Beckham was a sign they are taking it seriously. Becks is still not 100% from his ankle injury, and it was obvious it shouldn’t have even played last Saturday at his debut.

Yeah, last night’s games made me look like an idiot pretty quickly. If it looks like teams are really making the push, then I revise my comments.
