The Pre-Game: 6/16 vs. Chicago Fire
By: Max J. | June 15th, 2007This weekend is finally here, which means it’s time for me to reprise my role as United’s Official “Only Fan Who Loves HDNet Games.” I have access only to a) a communal TV from whence I get ESPN2 and b) a mediocre hotel sports bar with the only satellite in town, from whence I get Fox Soccer, and, thank God, HDNet. So while all of you are complaining, me and my Esky jersey will be enjoying the high-def glory over outrageously expensive pints of Anchor Steam.
On to actual game thoughts:
Goff has given us nothing definite on Kpene, but it does sound good. The “more interesting idea” I referred to yesterday was playing Fred opposite Emilio and starting Casal on the left with Benny on the right. That’s something I’d still be interested to see, but it’s a lot of experimentation in a game where we need to build on last game’s success and three points is paramount.
A stab at the lineup:
Emilio Kpene
Gomez
Olsen Fred
Carroll
Gros McTavish Erpen Namoff
Perkins
Chicago should, by all rights, be an easy target. But LA was also an easy target, and only a Nate Jacqua suckfest of epic proportions saved us there (I was at the Toolbox to witness said suckfest, and if our performance looked bad on TV, it was far worse in person). Especially with Boswell out, I see this turning out to be an unsatisfying game. We’ll probably get the three points, but in an ugly way where Chicago threatens a lot and Perkins does a lot more to keep us the game than the back four or the attack. Call it 2-1 and a handful of Valium.
