Welcome to Soctober
By: jon | October 26th, 2007Max sort of stole my thunder, but I’ll break down my thoughts for ya.
- The presentation of this game was shocking. From cameras operated by monkeys, to Wynalda saying the wind was effecting the ball WHEN IT WAS ON THE GROUND, this was the worst produced soccer game I have ever seen on TV. Also, the words of this title were actually stated. Can you believe that? Also, Julie Foudy randomly said, “WOOOOOO”.
- As Max said, the lineup told you what we were going to see. We don’t have the midfield to play 1 striker, and we don’t have the backups to have our two top forwards out and still score a goal.
- Kpene was a muppet. When you are in the game, Guy, YOU PRESSURE THE D. There were only 3 defensemen, and you let them screw around on their backpasses.
- Vanney has no ups, and McTavish had numerous lapses that should have resulted in goals. Why was Bobby Boswell on the bench? Why?
- Brian Carroll and Clyde Simms were Brian Carroll and Clyde Simms. I had to remember that.
- Emilio came in too late. I would have put him in around the 60th minute. We started turning the screws, but it was too late to have anything happen.
- Hand ball.
- Tom Soehn better get this team focused for next week. They need to score 2, and I don’t want to hear this overtime business.

The word Soctober should be banned from our lexicon for life. Also was amazing to hear Wynalda compare the flares in Section 8 to the fires in California. As for the game, I think United will come back at home. They just need their strikeforce to be healthy.

Let’s see now. That’s four times DCU has played Chicago in the playoffs, right? And they have yet to score on them. Blanco and those guys are in their domes now. I pick Fire to move on after a 1-1 tie at RFK, though your heart is going to be seriously hurting after watching DCU launch desperation shot after desperation shot int he final 10 mins. or so, which will probably go like this: Wide left, wide left, over the goal, wide right, wide left, over the goal. Save. Save. AHHH! There goes Blanco on the counter!!! Oh wait!! He’s carded for flopping as Troy Perkins is the only guy within 20 meters of himn and he goes down like he’s been shot. Still, just as DCU gets set for a strike going the other way, the whistle blows and its another long winter for the Red and Black, who at least can cradle their Supporter’s Shield for consolation while everyone else calls Dynamo the repeat champions. If only, if only, if only … all winter long.

I am assuming the hand ball you are commenting on was when Moreno and Conde were both going up for a ball in the box. I don’t think you can call a hand ball there. They were both going up, Moreno came in a little hard and Conde lost balance resulting in his arms sort of flailing. Non-intentional and it was from the result of Moreno coming in a little too hard, good no call.

On the “handball”, it was Conde who led with his arm first to try to keep Moreno out of the play. The ball then hit his outstretched arm when both players went up for it. It wouldn’t have been a bad call if the ref had chosen to give it.
That said, it was definitely a judgment call and I wasn’t that upset about it. Calling Moreno for a foul there was harsh IMO.
Kpene can’t play by himself up top, it just won’t work. I agree, I was hoping for Emilio sooner (start of the second half would’ve been great, but I guess he couldn’t play that long). Moreno was more effective, but Carroll needed to be pulled sooner to play with 2 forwards. Simms was alright, but I thought Carroll was awful.
They’ve got a win in them, but it won’t be easy against a team this strong defensively.

Is there an away goal rule for this first round of the playoffs?

pure aggregate matt. if we win by one we get overtime no matter what the score is. win by two and we get the monkey off our backs.

Ha, sorry, Jon. Give me an email and we can talk about whether or not you’d like me to be writing stuff here through the playoffs.

Kpene is an idiot.
Did he think he was doing anything other than running for the team? I think Dyachenko is far better, hell, put in Addlery.
There needs to be crazy support for United at the RFK. I know I’ll be there.

Matt- no away goals rule in MLS playoffs. If things are cumulatively tied, they play extra time and then PKs if necessary.
I’m glad Soehn waited to put Emilio in when he did. He was just coming back from injury, and United was ‘only’ one goal down. Now we can be fairly sure Emilio will be 100% for this Thursday. And the team should be able to score at least one goal in RFK.
