Pre Game: The Circus is in Town

By: jon | August 21st, 2009

Tomorrow marks the third inaugural “Beckham invades DC Tour”. I’ve been to the two before, and I’ll be to the third. In the two previous meetings, we saw two wins for DC, and the win last year in decisive fashion. The circumstances leading up to tomorrow’s match are starkly different, with DC United on a steep decline and LA Galaxy as hot as fire.
After a bad (well, awful) game in Toronto, DCU lost 3-1 in Honduras due in no small part to Mr. Greg Janicki. DCU hasn’t lost at home all year, but Saturday could change all that. LA won Wednesday against Chicago with no Becks, and are 6-1-2 in their last 9 games. Ruh row!
Pontius should be back, which will help our tired and old attack. Szetela has hopefully recovered from whatever “coach’s reasons” do to you, and will be ready to hold down the middle. A 4 man backline is necessary when going against the LA attack, and I hope Tommy realizes that.
I’ll have more up tomorrow.

I know this is non-DC United related, but I wanted to use the platform I have to talk about the absolute travesty that occured today, August 21, 2009. Liverpool supporters, with the expressed support of Liverpool Football Club, have driven the ONLY serious soccer radio show in the United States off the air with a racist, anti-Semitic, and truly vile actions targeting Cohen and his family. What world are we living in where instead of turning the channel or just convincing people to not watch the show or listen to it? In the country where I live, we can agree to disagree. Do I agree with the people who instead of proposing real alternatives to spiraling health care costs scream crazily at elected officials? Hell no. But they have the right to be crazy. That’s what we do here.

If I didn’t hate Liverpool, I certainly do now. I’m a Chelsea supporter, so I already hoped for Liverpool to fail. I will now actively root for them to fail in every conceivably way. Pool supporters have gone down in my estimation, and a club that allows groups to take the actions they did with their support is a classless organization.
