Paging Mr. Casal to the Courtesy Phone
By: Max J. | July 1st, 2007We’re now three days removed from the Rapids game and no word on Casal’s injury. Meanwhile, the BigSoccer rumor mill has picked up the following interesting tidbits:
- Casal does not appear on the roster at United’s website.
- In the Stats section of said website, Casal’s line is marked with “Player no longer with the team” asterisk.
- Today was the deadline for waiving players without salary cap penalty.
So the plot thickens and Casal and his lack of injury updates may be gone. It’s a pretty ignominious slide from assisting on the first goal of the year to getting dumped less than halfway through the season, but Casal wasn’t given much opportunity to show anything, either. He’s 19 and in his first year with the club and it seemed as though they were treating him as the project he clearly was. I still believe he could have developed into a superb crosser and the true wing player United needs.
If Casal really is out, that’s now basically two dumps for roster slots within the week. I really hope there are big, long-term answers for those spots and money, or I’ll really start to worry that someone in the front office is showing symptoms of Steinbrenner’s Disease.
