Maryland United

By: jon | February 12th, 2009

Breaking over at the Washington Post, it appears that United has finally decided to pack up and leave the district after years of governmental ineptitude. Link here.

The stadium wouldn’t be built for at least 2 more years, as DCU has a contract with the DCSEC. After that point, it would either be built at the Morgan Boulevard or Largo Town Center metro stop. In case you’re curious, its 15 minutes further than RFK.

There is a press conference on Monday, so it appears that the resolution to a long battle is nearing its end. I’m not totally happy about it having to be in PG county, but if that’s what it takes to get a new stadium built, than so be it. But I still refuse to live in Maryland.

yeah, I too hate MD. I find is absolutely laughable that DC cannot get itself together in order to keep its most successful (in terms of recent success) professional sports teams.

    BLAH!

this is great news. the stadium will be about 5 miles from RFK so i dont get how it is “too far”

for the record i live in fairfax county and go to every game at RFK and that will not change just because the stadium is 5 more miles down the highway.

also alot of details have come out since last week but its to much to put in a comment.

the basics are that the stadium will be “urban”, have 24,000 seats, a roof (for the seats at least),a stage with removable seating (terrace maybe?) and is set to open in 2012 (late 2011 if everything goes ahead of schedule)

Not that I have any insight into what’s required for a stadium location, but I wish they could build a stadium in place of the rundown warehouses on the northern side of Crystal City, between the end of Crystal Drive and 395 on the east side of rt 1…

    - 3 blocks from metro (could just extend / expand the underground corridors/people-movers/mall there through to the stadium entrance for a rain-free easy walk over from metro. certainly with increased traffic you’d get better food/shops moving into the existing retail space that currently buzzes during weekdays but is dead evenings/weekends).

    - 3rd VA stop for the yellow line from DC, also serviced by blue line down from Rosslyn, which is better than riding out to Largo Town Center

    - Easy access to the Mt Vernon bike trail

    - Next door to National airport and all of the airport hotels- great for out-of-towners to fly in for a game

    - Crystal City is clearly TRYING to create a walkable commercial street on Crystal Drive (though still hasn’t managed a critical mass outside of office workers), so would definitely work to integrate the stadium with the surrounding area

    - if built above the level of 395 I think you’d get a pretty nice view of the Potomac, east potomac park (cherry blossoms), and the memorials to the northeast across the river, close enough to the mall to feel connected to “downtown DC” rather than the suburbs
