Game Thread: DC at Chicago
By: jon | August 16th, 2008Throwing this up for the couple of you that like to comment on this here blog.
Lineup: *CRAYTON*; Namoff, McTavish, Burch, Martinez; Fred, Simms, Quaranta, Guerrero; Moreno, Emilio. Subs: Wells, Zaher, Kirk, Vide, P. Carroll, Thompson, Cordeiro.
You read that right. A goalie, who has trained with the team for a week, and has just signed his contract yesterday, is in goal against our playoff bogey team. The DC FO and Tommyboy are quite obviously not Wells fans.
Tino back in the CAM role, and I forsee another score. We need another forward….look at that bench. If Moreno or Emilio get tired/injured, Cordiero in? Tino into a striker position and a 5 man midfield with Thompson or Vide as second CDM? We shall see.
I’ll keep this updated. You make your presence known.
8:33- Finally, no more hard rock elevator music. McBride…loved him at Fulham. Nervous about him at Chicago. Hope he scores as many as he did with the Olympic team.
8:37: Really? Andy Herron over McBride? I’d take a wheelchair bound McBride over Herron.
8:43: Clock it. 8:43, Blanco falls in a heap. You’ll see this a lot. Looks rather sloppy so far on both sides. Crayton can kick the ball far…? That’s all I can tell you so far.
8:46- Soumare is a talented individual. Emilio never does well against large, physical defenders. The only counter for size and strength is speed. And he ain’t got it. Fred is up to his old tricks. Holding, flair, and no results.
8:47- So easy, Wilman Conde can do it.
8:49- I really hate when players roll around and hold their knee like all of their ligaments exploded. C’mon Martinez. You’re better than that. You’re not missing anything folks. No chances either way.
8:51- Seriously, this team would be lost without Gonzalo, his playacting a few minutes ago withstanding. Uh oh, bad foul by Simms leading to a free kick outside the 18.
8:54- Blanco misses wide, and we’re still at 0-0. It’s dinner time for me, Spectre, keep the updates going in the comments.
9:02- And I’m back. Right in time to see Namoff carded after a request by Blanco. Which I thought was a Yellow in it self….?
My girlfriend can really cook, as a side note.
Chicago enjoying more of the ball right now, with more half chances. Emilio (who I didn’t know was only 5′7) is going to have a long night.
9:05- Tim Wayland is an idiot. Delayed whistle. HEY, Crayton CAN command the box, as he jumps out and handles a cross.
9:11- And I was in the bathroom…how’d we score?
9:14- Andy Herron complains as McTavish introduces his elbow to Herron’s face. Fred plows over Soumare. We are playing Prison rules here, and I like it. Gonzalo is going to suplex someone.
9:16- Burch and Crayton team up to make a great play on a Blanco longball to Herron. I like this new guy…
9:18- and ANOTHER yellow for DC, going to McTavish on Andy Herron. In hindsight, not a smart foul. Keep your heads, fellas.
44th minute- Crayton makes a diving save on Blanco. Again, I like this guy. This game has made me realize that we need a big target forward, a la Jaqua or Cooper. Can’t afford him, but we should look for one in the draft.
HALFTIME- Defense in bending but not breaking. McBride is good for a goal in 2nd half, so we need to get another one too.
46th minute- Game on. McBride in. Let’s go guys.
47th minute- Fred off the post, Namoff fumbles the ball out of bounds, and Jon Busch is swearing a lot into the microphone. Easy, chief.
53rd minute- Looks like Spectre has this update thing on lockdown. I’m gonna sit back and enjoy. I’ll chime in if I see anything important.

Fred staying in…I’m watching him, will give you update

Fred’s still in, and hasn’t gotten much of the ball, as if United are concious he’s had to downshift a gear. Looks almost like he’s just going to focus on defense save for when a chance really presents itself. Either that or he’s buying time for a sub. Doesn’t look too serious.
In fact, he just served up a nice pass into the box for Jaime, so it CAN’T be serious. He’s getting more help on his side now though.

Quaranta out, Vide in, so much foFred coming out, at least for now. Maybe it’s just mind games and Fred is using it to save a touch of energy for the final push.
73rd, 1-0.

Now featuring Chris Rolfe, kicker for the Bears….It’s up and it’s good, from 30 yards out. He could’ve made that field goal from 50, Bob.

Fred seems back into 5th gear again, good to see.

Shouldn’t have said that, Fred just completely missed the ball on a kick. Didn’t account for anything tho. He’s still running hard.

Kirk on for Moreno.
How do you play the ball back 40 yards on a corner kick, down 1-0 in the 83rd? Or better, WHY?
Not that I’m complaining Chicago.

Yeah, it’s true that with some time and chemistry, McBride should be very dangerous for Chicago.
I know ajani left, but I thought there may be a lurker or two, so I just kept going. Hope I didn’t mess up your viewing experience, Jon.
A big win, Fred the easy MOTM for me.

Was also impressed with Crayton myself (and I’m just *shrug & grimace* on Wells, not a hater of him). Crayton seemed steady and calm despite not having played with the guys before.
Closing thoughts Jon?
