First Day of Camp: Choosing Bunks, Making Friends Edition (Updated)
By: jon | January 28th, 2008Well, it’s about that time. DC United opened their training camp today, and while I could run over to the practice fields and spy on people, I won’t.
Goff is reporting that the full compliment of South Americans, including Marcelo Gallardo, Gonzalo Martinez, Gonzalo Peralta, Franco Niell, and Jose Carvallo I was wondering if the team was going to shoot on open nets since Wells is with the USMNT, but luckily Carvallo made it. (And on the less exciting front, Justin Moose, and former MLSer Josh Gardner are here.)
As I previously stated, it looks like a strong probability of Gomez to Colorado in exchange for picks or money. While looking at it as former MVP for picks and money, it seems like a raw deal. But as other have pointed out, DCU doesn’t have a lot of leverage in the situation since Gomez said he wants to stay in MLS and has stated he’s not going back to DCU. But you never know, there’s a sucker born everyday.
Also NOT in the house, Steven DeRoux and Greg Vanney. Other teams have inquired about Vanney, and Goff predicts a trade pretty soon. DeRoux is on the prowl for a USL team, but has the option of coming back to camp if he can’t find anything he likes.
I’ll keep you all posted if anything happens, and looking at the roster, I think it will.
UPDATE: Goff has confirmed that Gallardo WILL be a Designated Player. The ramifications for this are many, and I’ll get into them tomorrow.
