Always Look On The Bright Side of Life (Right.)
By: Max J. | November 2nd, 2007Since the end of the game I’ve done adrenaline-fueled rage, and then depression, and finally drunk. Very, very drunk. So that it’s a new day and the sun is (uncomfortably) bright in the sky, there’s nothing to do but try and find some positives.
If the first game told us all about Tommy, the second told us all about our players and what needs to happen next year. A solid center half. A real winger. Depth in the attack (can we trade for Rolfe?). Boswell as an expansion draft candidate.
We put on an amazing show for non-soccer fans. 19,000 fans in RFK simply looks better than 25,000 anywhere else, especially during Blackout season. I always though there was distinct method in the madness to our Thursday night schedule run. Last night’s game buried on FSC could not possibly win any converts to the MLS cause, but that spectacle on ESPN2 just might.
And finally, at least they fought. We can ask (and oh, how we will) about why they fought for twenty and not ninety. But two years ago I walked out of the Meadowlands after a Giants playoff game that was over after five minutes. Sitting in that stadium, with nothing to root for but a swift end for my hapless team, was the most soul-crushing sports experience of my life. And God knows last night was headed that way. But even if I was howling and furious and devastated at full time, that was infinitely better than a further endless melting into the couch cushions. United went out with the adrenaline pumping and everything to fight for. There’s something, no matter how useless it seems right now, to be said for that.

Glad to see you’ve got your head up now, Max. Though you can’t trade for Rolfe, sorry.

Whatever. The Shield gets us into the CCC and SuperLiga. An MLS Cup would have been nice, but DC’s league champions, so there’s not a whole lot to complain about this season.
Anyway, I’m just not a big fan of the first-round playoff format. The conference finals and MLS Cup are one-and-done – why not the conference semis too? How is it an advantage to be a higher seed and start a series out with a tough road game? (I have the same complaint about European cup championships that use this format too.)
