Emilio to Morelia? Say it ain’t so…
By: jon | January 16th, 2008Goff has it on not too great authority that Morelia is going to buy Luciano Emilio, the 2007 Golden Boot winner and our entire offense.
Will this happen? It could. Emilio is still under contract, for I believe 2 more seasons. It would take a lot of money to pry him lose. But if they come in with a strong enough offer, DC will sell him.
Where will that leave us? On the wrong side of a lot of 2-1 and 1-0 matches.
The thing I never understood about the MLS, the salary cap, and allocations. The salary cap is not a huge dollar amount. If the team trades away its stars for Allocation money, doesn’t that just make it easier on the owner, if the team was going to be around the salary cap? Or is allocation money that can be used beyond the cap? I read the rules and it still doesn’t make sense.

I think allocation money works to “buy down” any salary that goes beyond the cap (DPs and grandfathered DPs like Donovan & Ruiz aside). So, if United has half a million dollars in allocation money, they can go up to half a million dollars over the salary cap.
I think. It might just be monopoly money, and the interpretation of the rule might depend on how many Niells can dance on the head of a pin. It is MLS, after all.

And since we won’t be getting any DP’s, it might as well just be Monopoly money.
