DCU linked to many Spanish speaking individuals
By: jon | January 12th, 2008Here at DC United, we love all things South American. Whether it be steaks, women, or football players, we can’t get enough. That’s why the so called “Argentine Pipeline” which has brought us Christian Gomez…and some other people…has given us a few more players, both from Argentina and other countries in the region. With limited knowledge of second division players in foreign countries, I’ll just give you their names and point you in the direction of Google or bluemeanies.
First up, Jose Carvallo, of the Peruvian persuasion. He’s a goalkeeper and plays for Universitario. Other than that, I can tell you that his first name means “Joe” in Spanish.
Second, Gonzalo Martinez. This guy actually has youtube clips, so we know he’s the real deal. He’s a central defender who has played for Colombia’s national team at Copa America and in World Cup qualifiers. On the club level, he’s played for Udinese, Napoli and Reggina in Italy; Olimpia and Libertad in Paraguay; and, most recently, to Millonarios in Colombia. Olimpia being Emilio’s last club. EDIT: Wrong Olimpia. My B. Once this is confirmed, I’ll post it.
Third, Gonzalo Peralta. This guy inspires not a whole lot of excitement. He is a starting central defender for Club Almirante Brown in Argentina’s second division. I know what you’re thinking…How did DC United get access to the starting defender for THE Almirante Brown of the prestigious Second Division in Argentina? I have no answers for you. I only wish I did.
Lastly, Franco Niell. This one even gets a link. Here it is. Like that? Official and stuff. From here, I shall quote from this official story.
Niell, 24, has spent his entire career with Argentinos Juniors, a first division club from Buenos Aires renowned for developing young talent, and been on the team’s senior roster since 2004. He has 10 career goals in 60 league appearances.
Yawn. 10 goals in 60 games. Not exactly Golden Boot material.
Despite being 5 feet 4 and about 145 pounds, Niell has a reputation for clever footwork and darting moves
5 foot 4, 145 pounds. I didn’t know we were signing second baseman or Spud Webb to DC United. Other than the rare exception, players this small can get eaten alive.
Alright, well that’s your little wrapup of moves that haven’t happened yet. My take? Screw these jokers, and buy Zidane. Want me to buy season tickets? That’s how.

Emilio comes to us from Club Olimpia in Honduras. Martinez played for Club Olimpia of Paraguay. Different Olimpia.

Niell’s production would look better by the minute because a lot of his appearances were apparently as a second half sub.

Well if he would be used in that way, Sayonara Kpene.

As an official member of Argentinos Juniors, I can guarantee you that you will love Franquito Niell. He is more of a fan favorite than a sporting idol, but he will still get the job done more often than not. He has great pace, positioning, and a spunkiness that is found only in the chosen few. As mentioned by bluemeanies, Niell’s position, due mostly to his diminuitive stature, is as a substitute. Enjoy him, for he will be missed in Buenos Aires.
