With the One Millionth pick in the MLS Draft, DC United picks…

With the 24th overall pick, United claims Cal-Berkeley holding midfielder Andrew Jacobson. He is 22 years old, 6 feet 2 and 188 pounds. First-team all-American this past season. Three-time all-Pac-10 first team selection after redshirting in 2004. He had 11 goals and 13 assists in 83 matches (62 starts). He had been projected to go as high as No. 10 overall.
In the third round (33rd overall), United selects left-sided midfielder Ryan Cordeiro from Connecticut. He’s 5-11 and 175 pounds, had 18 goals and 19 assists in 84 career matches (59 starts).
And about 3 1/2 hours after the draft commenced, United used its final pick (52nd overall) to take Creighton defender-midfielder Tony Schmitz.
Also, Payne has said that it looks like Moreno will be back for 2 years, at diminished salary, and that they’re going to need a decision from Gomez soon, either way. Snap judgement? Great news on Moreno. He’s no longer the dynamic attacker he was in his youth, but his ability to control the flow of the offense in the final third is important, and in games where he was absent last season, it was noticeable. What do you think?
Also, it looks like Emilio will either get a raise and stay, not get a raise, stay and be pissed, or leave. Hard to say yet. And Monday should be the big day of DC United news. That’s great cause I get the day off and I can talk about it.
Until then, I’m moving this weekend, and real life takes precedence. If you went to school with any of the draft picks, or have something to say about keeping Moreno and Gomez’s status, leave it in the comments.
