And this is why the SuperDraft is worthless…

By: jon | January 30th, 2008

Andrew Jacobson

Our first pick of the draft, Andrew Jacobson has flown the coup the the land of the Gaellic Cock.
Jacobson signed with Lorient, of Ligue 1. Links here and here.

So we draft a player in the second round, who was projected to be a first round talent, but only slipped to the second because of concerns that he would seek overseas opportunities. Yet we still went for it, and were burned for the second consecutive year (Jay Needham 2007). As long as the MLS has below poverty level wages for its young players, a player would be an idiot not to go overseas.

Eddie Pope, take notice. Raise the salary floor or this league will get older, and worse.

Here’s me with my finest Nelson Muntz impression:

    HA HA!

(but seriously, I agree with you. I know some draftees signed a contract w/ MLS before the draft yet some didn’t? Its all so unclear to me how it all works yet its such a stupid way of grabbing talent, I pretty much don’t care to learn about it.)

Some do, most didn’t. The ones that are Generation Addidas did. Ryan Cordiero, who we also drafted, did.

Just a little peeved. Particularly because what we’re likely to get for Gomez are picks in a draft thats useless.

to be honest MLS is strong enough to have competitive wages with the norwigian leagues ( probably not at the top but at least with average salaries) … if i remember right the cap is someway around 4 mil.. (if that ). THE league cap should be around 10-15 mil at least…

Whoa…if I’m not mistaken, he will be the first American to play in France in a long time. Gooch couldn’t hack it in France with Metz, a perpetual bottom-dweller, and after three appearances, he was loaned and then sold to Belgium.

    Here’s hoping Jacobson lasts.
